PHP and Cookies; a Good Mix! plus articles and information on web

PHP and Cookies; a Good Mix!
Dennis Pallett

Introduction
Cookies have long been used in PHP scripts, and are a very useful function. But what exactly are cookies Maybe you have used then, but you still dont know exactly what they are. Or you are completely new to cookies It doesnt matter, because in this tutorial I will show you exactly what cookies are, and what they are used for.
Cookies in a nutshell
Cookies are small pieces of information that is stored on the computer of your visitors. Each browser handles it differently, but most simply store the information in a small text file. Internet Explorer has a special folder, which can be found in your C:Windows or C:WindowsSystem32 folder. You can delete all your cookies, by going to the Options and Clearing Cookies or deleting them by hand. I dont recommend this though.
Almost every website uses cookies. If you go to Amazon.com, you will get several cookies. The same goes for CNN.com. Even Google uses cookies! They are extremely useful for temporarily storing information. For example, if you have a login system for your visitors, you could save their userid and password very heavily encrypted! so they are automatically logged in the next time they visit your website.
Or you could remember their last visit, and highlight everything that is new. And thats just the beginning.
Using Cookies
Using cookies in PHP is extremely easy. In fact, there is nothing to it, because of PHPs inbuilt setcookie function http://php.net/setcookie. Have a look at the documentation, and then try the following example:

<php

// Set a cookie
// Cookie name: name
// Cookie value: Dennis Pallett
// Cookie expire: in 24 hours

setcookie name, Dennis Pallett, time + 60*60*24;
>

If you run the code above, then a cookie will be set. Thats all. The cookie name and value are pretty obvious. The cookie expire is when the cookie expires, or goes away. Simply use the time function http://php.net/time and add the number of seconds you want to have the cookie available to it. In the example I added 60*60*24=86400 seconds, or 24 hours.
If you have looked at the documentation, you probably noticed there are additional arguments. As the documentation says, the path is to limit a cookie to a specific path on your web server. This is often used when you run multiple instances of the same script in separate directories. You can safely omit this argument when it doesnt matter if the cookie is available site-wide.
There is also the domain argument. This can be used to limit the cookie to a specific sub-domain, e.g. test.example.com. You can also safely ignore this argument, or set it to .example.com note the beginning period, this is essential!.
Finally, there is also the secure argument. This argument is only used for cookies that are sent over a secure HTTPS connection SSL. Just ignore this argument, unless youre working with a secure connection.
One thing that should be mentioned is that cookies must be set, before you display any HTML/text. Its probably best if you turn on output buffering by putting ob_start http://php.net/ob_start at the top of your page.
Now that you have set a cookie, you probably want to retrieve the value as well. After all, that is the whole point of using cookies. Thankfully, as PHP is ever so easy, you can retrieve the same way as you retrieve a GET value. See the following example to retrieve the value of the previous example:

<php
echo Your name is . $_COOKIE[name];
>

This should print "Your name is Dennis Pallett". Theres nothing more to it. Its just that easy!
Finally, one thing you probably want to do as well is remove cookies. This is as easy as setting them. Simply change the value of the cookie to FALSE, and change the expire date to -3000 seconds. See the following example:

<php
setcookie name, FALSE, time-1000;
>

Checking if cookies are enabled
Before you start using cookies, you must make sure your visitor has cookies enabled. This can be done with a simply PHP checking script. Unfortunately, the PHP page needs to reload to check for cookies. But this can be done very transparently, and your visitor should hardly notice anything.
The following example will first set a test cookie, then reload the page, and finally check whether cookies are enabled.

<php
error_reporting E_ALL ^ E_WARNING ^ E_NOTICE;

// Check if cookie has been set or not
if $_GET[set] != yes {
// Set cookie
setcookie test, test, time + 60;

	// Reload page
header "Location: checkcookies.phpset=yes";
} else {
// Check if cookie exists
if !empty$_COOKIE[test] {
echo "Cookies are enabled on your browser";
} else {
echo "Cookies are <b>NOT</b> enabled on your browser";
}
}
>

Run the code above, and see what the output is. Check if cookies are enabled in your browser. If theyre not enabled, then you can enable them by going to your browsers options. Unfortunately, this is different from each browser, so I cant give you exact instructions. But Google can.
Storing Arrays
One feature of cookies that is often missed in articles is the ability to story arrays. Cookies can be used to store multi-dimensional arrays, which can be extremely useful to store data.
Consider the following code;

<php
setcookie "name[first]", "Dennis", time + 60*60*24;
setcookie "name[last]", "Pallett", time + 60*60*24;
>

You can then display these two cookies using the following code:

<php
echo "First Name: " . $_COOKIE[name][first];
echo "<br />Last Name: " . $_COOKIE[name][last];
>

The cookie name is an array, and has multiple values. You can even go deeper and have multi-dimensional arrays, e.g. $_COOKIE[name][test][something][value]. You could store whole arrays of data in cookies. But beware that you dont store too much data, there are certain size limits to cookies.
In Conclusion...
Cookies are really versatile, and can be used for a lot of different purposes. Many websites use cookies, and cookies can really make your website more personalized. Using cookies in PHP isnt hard at all, and you should be able to use them without any difficulty.
Before actively using cookies in your website, you must check whether the visitor has enabled them in their browser. If they dont have cookies enabled, you must either redirect to a non-cookies version of your website, or you can make sure your website also works without cookies.
You can download a sample script at http://www.phpit.net/demo/php%20and%20cookies/logger.zip, where cookies are used in a somewhat practical way. In this example, there is a logging module, called log.php and a display module, called history.php. Basically, you include the log.php in other PHP pages, and then you can view history.php to lookup all the pages you have viewed and how often. The example uses arrays, and stores them in cookies.
The examples in this article can be downloaded at http://www.phpit.net/demo/php%20and%20cookies/examples.zip.
If you have a really unique practical way of using cookies, please let me know at dennis [AT] nocertainty [DOT] com. Id really like to hear about interesting ways of using cookies.

Bas de Baar

You probably paid a lot of money for that little triangle of fabric with the almost-not-there waistband; but even if you buy your thongs by the dozen at Walmartr you might as well keep them looking better for longer. After all, thongs arent just underwear, theyre a statement!
Thongs are a bit more delicate than the cotton "granny panties" that you keep around for, um, periodic purposes, so its important to treat them with the care that they deserve. You dont really have to be concerned about the fabric content, or even read the care and handling tag, because no company that I have ever heard of has ever made a pair of "Dry Clean Only" underwear. You can bet that your thongs are washable.
We all know that the term "washable" has different meanings to different people. To guys in general, and most college students regardless of gender, washable means to stuff as many garments as possible into the washing machine without regard to water temperature, color or fabric. Well, when it comes to thongs, washable means "hand wash only" even if the fabric care label tells you otherwise.
Even on the most delicate cycle a washing machine puts a lot of stress on fabric. And, since there isnt much fabric on your average thongs to begin with, it doesnt need any extra stress; especially when that stress shows up as rough fabric patches and reduced elasticity.
Heres how to keep your thongs coming back for more:

	Put some cold water into the sink and add a few drops of any commercial hand washing detergent. Dont use regular laundry detergent, shampoo, a bar of soap, or dishwashing detergent! If youre away from home and dont have access to the right detergent, then use plain water alone. Hand washing detergent doesnt produce suds so dont waste any time waiting for the bubbles to appear.
Submerge your thongs in the water and let them soak for a while. Then swish them around for a few seconds while gently squeezing them underwater to force the water and detergent through the fabrics pores. If youve got any scrubbing that needs to be done, do it gently. Its better to soak away any evidence of "lifes little problems" then it is to wear away fabric layers and expose scratchy threads.
Gently squeeze the water through the material a few more times and then rinse the thongs in running cold water. Lay them flat on a towel and let them dry naturally. Dont put your thongs in a clothes dryer even on the gentle setting. An hour in the clothes dryer to a pair of thongs is like a day in the desert for a Polar Bear! The heat will kill them.

If you absolutely must wash your thongs in a washing machine then use the cold water setting and the ultra-gentle cycle. My advice is to put your thongs into lingerie bag and toss the bag into the washing machine. If you think that washing machines love to eats socks, which are rather thick and meaty as fabrics go, just imagine how many pairs of thongs will get snatched up by a killer washing machine with a bad attitude!

Nitin Jain

Heres a conundrum: While experts agree that high cholesterol and blood pressure are crucial heart disease risk factors, many people who suffer chest pain or even heart attacks have levels that are perfectly normal. This puzzle has prompted researchers to scour the body for other cardiovascular villains. Several have emerged in recent years, but the one that stands out the most is inflammation.
The latest studies suggest that chronic inflammation of the lining of arteries is an important factor in the development of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. What causes this inflammation is not clear, but the good news is that 1 the advice that is given for lowering cholesterol, blood pressure and triglycerides also works fine for fighting inflammation; and 2 you can tackle all 4 culprits with the help of dietary weapons - http://www.vitaminsdiary.com/nutrients.htm In fact, you can plan your war against heart disease in your kitchen. Here is how:
1. Think like an artist when you choose fruits and vegetables: Eat those with the brightest colors. They have the most heart protective antioxidant pigments. A diet high in fruits and veggies also provides another important heart benefit, salicylic acid, which is the same anti-inflammatory compound created when aspirin is broken down in the body.
2. Increase food sources of omega-3 fatty acids which target high triglycerides in the blood. Good sources of omega-3s include fish such as sardines, mackerel; nuts and seeds; green leafy vegetables; grains like wheat, bajra; legumes like rajma, cowpea, and black gram.
3. Reduce the amount of meats you eat, especially red meats, and always select lean cuts. Use meat as a seasoning for vegetable dishes rather than the focal point of a meal.
4. Cut down on salt and instead use herbs and spices like ginger, garlic, turmeric and fenugreek liberally in your cooking; the first three are naturally anti-inflammatory and the last has soluble fibre which helps sweep away cholesterol from the arteries.
5. Shift to groundnut, mustard, rice bran and olive oils which contain monosaturated fatty acids that help lower bad LDL and maintain levels of good HDL cholesterol. Drastically limit margarine, vegetable shortening, butter and all products made with partially hydrogenated oils.
6. Fruits and vegetables, whole grains wheat, brown rice, oats, beans and pulses, are also great sources of soluble and insoluble fibre, which trap LDLs and usher them out of the body.

Good Domain Names Make Your Dreams Memorable
Terry Nicholls

"What was the name of that website It was good. It has something to do with..."
Is your web site like many others
Domain names always on the tip of a visitors tongue, but not quite memorable enough
Your choice of domain name needs to be easy to remember, as well as focused enough that your visitor will know right away what your site is about.
A Few Rules
Some rules do apply when deciding on a domain name:
Domain names must be at least two characters long but no more than 63 characters, not counting the TLD.
You can use any combination of letters, numbers, or hyphens, but you cant use a hyphen as the first or last character.
Domain names are not case-sensitive, so my-home-based-business-advisor.com is the same as My-Home-Based-Business-Advisor.com.
Choosing A Domain Name
Choosing good domain names is almost as important as choosing your actual business see our Startup Ideas page.
There are many different schools of thought when it comes to picking good domain names.
Some say to choose a short, concise name.
Some like numbers in the name, some dont.
Hyphens and underscores -- as opposed to words all running together -- are another debated topic. Its mostly a matter of easier reading for your human visitors. Which do you find easier to read
myhomebasedbusinessadvisor
my_home_based_business_advisor
my-home-based-business-advisor
Generally, the hyphens between words make domain names easier to read for most people.
While search engines dont rank domain names, a keyword-rich name will let your visitors know what your web site is about before they get there. This makes them more comfortable because they know what theyre getting in advance.
Also, when you get other sites to link to yours, that link is usually based on your domain name. This means that your main keyphrase which you used as your domain name will be the actual anchor text and search engines do give additional ranking for that.
Domain names play a major role in making your dream memorable to the world.
Take the time to do it right and your dream of a home-based business will be seen all over the world!
Those are the questions I asked myself when I came across the subscription based shopping advice service from Bargain.com. Just $10 a month and they

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, particularly when it comes to buying a home. Features that attract one home-buyer may repel another.
However, the one feature of interest to every home-buyer is price. Getting the most home for your money is paramount. The real problem is figuring out whether that fixer-upper on one street is a better buy than the home in next-to-new condition two blocks away. That

Rexanne Mancini

Last week in my newsletter, I mentioned that my children knew how to behave in nice restaurants because they had been exposed to the atmosphere at an early age. My idea of well behaved might be different from yours, however, I think there are certain basics that are important and universal.
When my daughters were babies, we would take them wherever we went. If they began to fuss or cry, one of us would promptly remove them from the room/restaurant/market/wherever. Not because we felt their crying or fussing was a bad thing. No, its a perfectly normal occurrence for infants and toddlers. We removed them as a courtesy to others who we felt did not need to be as tolerant as we were with our childrens noise. In consequence, my daughters know that other people are not as wildly in love with their racket or with them as we are. Nor should they be expected to be.
As our children grew older, they were always told the rules of our outings, how to behave and to always speak softly if other adults were present. Sometimes, its fine to let them get a little crazy ... just know your audience! If we are at a five star restaurant where many other diners have come to enjoy a gracious and expensive meal, would we expect everyone there to be enthralled with juniors vocal or behavioral outbursts Would we really expect them to care if our child is having a bout with walking pneumonia and coughing uncontrollably Nope. Its rude. And rudeness is basically nothing more than bad manners. If there is an emergency with your child, by all means dont give a flying flamingo about what others think. But this is the exception. Besides, children who are that sick belong at home, not in public.
Last night, my girls and I were in a department store. There was a toddler carrying on and screaming for more than 15 minutes when my younger daughter said: "Now his mommy is going to tell him to stop because there are other people in here that dont want to hear it!"
Unfortunately, his mommy did not tell him any such thing. She let him wail and scream and cry, much to the chagrin and annoyance of everyone else in the store. You know what As much as I love kids and cannot bear to see or hear them suffering, I disliked this kid immensely!
My reasoning is this: if our kids learn that they are free to trample on the peace, space or rose gardens of others, they will develop into spoiled and inconsiderate brats. And then who will like them Who will want to spend time with them Who, besides their forgiving parents, will be able to tolerate their lack of social graces and good manners No one

7 Good Reasons for Playing With Your Cat
Larry Chamberlain

Playing reinforces the bond between you and your cat.
Playing with your cat is the best possible way to build up a bond between the two of you. Do you want your cat to think of you as more than someone who is there to provide food, shelter and warmth Then regular play sessions will go a long way to ensuring that your feline friend sees you as an object of his or her affections, that you are someone to greet when you arrive home.
Do not let your cat think that your hands are playthings. If your cat gets the message that it is OK to scratch at, or bite your hands, you will have the devils own job of curing him of the habit.
Playing will help preventing your cat from becoming overweight.
The best way to ensure that your cat does not become overweight is by feeding him correctly with a balanced diet, but exercise also plays a part in keeping your kitty healthy. If yours is an indoor cat, then playing with you may be his only opportunity for exertion and staying trim. Dont overdo it though, limit play time to about 15 minutes.
Playing will help your cat to become confident.
Kittens learn how to relate with their siblings and other cats through play, it is their social education, how they learn their place in the world. Help you cat to continue this enlightenment by playing with him.
Also regular play periods, coupled with petting sessions, will get your cat used to human interaction, he will be less likely to shy away and hide, when visitors call.
Playing will help your cat develop his hunting abilities.
Hunting is a natural instinct for all cats, a cat confined to indoors usually has little chance to express and develop this instinct. Enjoy some of your play times using an interactive cat toy, the kind with a catnip mouse on the end of a cord are good. Encourage kitty to chase the toy mouse, allow him to pounce for the kill.
Have a selection of cat toys but use only three or four in one session, next time amuse your feline with a different choice. Keep some toys only for play sessions, put them away between times, so that they remain interesting to your cat. Toys like catnip mice can be safely left out for kitty to amuse himself with, but be aware that small objects can, and do, get swallowed by cats. Never encourage playing with buttons, pieces of string, small bells etc. Plastic bags are as dangerous for cats as they are for children, and are not playthings.
Playing will help your cat release aggression.
Cats often display aggressive traits through boredom. Tutor your cat not to scratch, bite or attack you with play sessions. Use praise to reward your cat for playing gently, as soon as he shows any sign he is about to use his teeth or claws - end the play session. This will teach your cat that aggressive cat behavior is best directed to his toys, and not you!
Playing is Fun for your cat!.
Cats need fun in their lives, just like humans need it. Relieve the monotony of eating, snoozing and using the litter tray by putting a bit of fun in your cats life. You will have a happier, more confident and less aggressive kitty.
Playing is Fun for you!.
And finally, it is fun for you to play with your cat. A cat is a wonderful pet just to have around the place to admire its beauty and for its company. But how much better for you to enjoy a little fun by playing with your cat. Cat playtime, good for your cat, good for you!
